Day 1
FRUSTRATING
DAY FOR LASER RADIAL EUROPEANS
Two hundred sailors went afloat at Ballyholme Yacht Club on Belfast Lough at midday today for what was to have been the postponed first championship race, but a promising light northerly which had filled in across Belfast Lough became patchy and died away.
The practice race yesterday (25th July) had enjoyed a fresh north westerly but it failed to hold overnight resulting in racing being abandoned completely today.
Three races are scheduled for tomorrow (27th July).
Yesterday competitors took part in the Parade of Nations to the Yacht Club.
They were welcomed by Alan McKewan, Commodore of BYC, Alderman Mrs. Valerie
Kinghan, Mayor of North Down, Eric Saunders of the Northern Ireland Events Company
and NI Sports Council, and representatives of UK Sport and Rooster Sailing.
The Championships, which are the biggest One Design sailing event ever to be held in Northern Ireland, have attracted the cream of international sailing talent to what promises to be a week of intense competition.
