Ladies' Day
It was ladies' day on the first day of the Laser Radial Youth World Championship when Krystal Weir from Australia and Paige Railey from USA each led home their fleet in the first two races today. Railey and Weir were first and second in the female single-handed class at the recent ISAF Youth World Championships and are now taking on a mixed fleet of 280 sailors from 28 countries and 6 continents.
Lake Garda turned on its best conditions for the 2 races each sailed in four fleets. In 14-knot winds, all but one of the eight starts got away first time. As the afternoon progressed, the thermal wind started to fade but there was still an adequate 8 knots to finish the last fleet of the day.
As in the previous week
for the Open Championship, Croatia is already proving to be the country to beat,
with its youth sailors taking over from the senior sailors at the top of the
leader board. Tonci Stipanovic scored a perfect 1,1 while his compatriot Tonko
Kuzmanic was only one place behind with a 1,2. Kuzmanic was so far in front
of his fleet that some thought that he had sailed the wrong course as he sailed
back through the fleet.
